in the eyes of the student

in the eyes of the student

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

in the eyes of the student

flirtatious empathy

mutual manifestations

appear in the pupils

that instantaneously instigate

the assignment to express affections

both get "A's" then graduate---

moving on,

to new schools of thought

emotions endeavoring higher degrees

of commitment,

but never forgetting the early teachers

and the accreditation earned

through revisions and rewrites

of relationships

that might find us still failing the class

yet much smarter than we would have been

had we not enrolled in love's enlightenment.

in Plath's "April Aubade" she ends the poem:

"Again we are deluded and infer
that somehow we are younger than we were".

Which is her implying that to learn is to love and to love is to grow old doing it. I know you and Plath are joined at the proverbial hip...lol..But I got the same feel with your ending here my friend...

wonderful poem....dana

frankly speaking, since I am still at the level of pupils somehow ,so I may not experience much perfectly the next stage ...but surely I can realize the tone of writing ..
I like the phrase "but never forgetting the early teachers
and the accreditation earned "
true, we move toward a lightening path but all of them will be impossible without our past time and teacher..
last line is just beyond imagination..
a profound poem and I love it..

'Though we never (supposedly,) stop learning, we still fall through cracks in the pavement along the way.

I love the comments and debate your poetry stirs jacob; in particular, I thought T's observation was spot on.

I like the thoughts and wisdom shared.
"through revisions and rewrites
of relationships
that might find us still failing the class
yet much smarter than we would have been
had we not enrolled in love's enlightenment."
The above lines solid and true. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry my friend.

You are welcome my friend.
Excellent metaphorical qualities in this piece. Very true words and a great way to represent the idea.

I love this poem, because its lessons apply to continued relationships not just a continuous stream of relationships. I am looking forward to the lessons learned in coming years. Thanks for a wonderful poem.

School of love, of life...there are no good grades, there is just a wide range of experience

dear Jacob, as time goes by, we learn
from observing that the emotions of romance
become our guide, We are diamonds in the rough...
then we slowly become polished to become a setting
in a golden ring of desire. truly, Pat
