Orphaned in Limbo

Orphaned in Limbo

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Orphaned in Limbo

little angels
ascend from the smoking
mountains of concrete and brick
mortar
as mortars blast life
into submissive agony

torn apart
bodies
families
in fanatical storm

they rise
so small
so young
still winged for flight

a huge hand reaches down
cradles
up past the clouds
the screaming chorus

ruins
charred tombs
a poet says a prayer

a eulogy is written
in charred metaphor
not clever

just a heart typing out
letters to God

sanctuary spoiled
the spoils of war
the playgrounds
now empty of laughter

which is forever stifled.

You have an amazing way with words, jacob. I couldn't help but be reminded of the concentration camps in WW2 and the little souls escaping up and out of the gas chambers, although I know you wrote it about Ukraine.

This would work for any time when a civilization has been pounded by terrorism and warfare. War is always such a gruesome thing. It is never a beautiful thing, but it is especially tragic when it is unprovoked, 99.

thank you, writergurl,
j.
This is so heartbreaking. We humans never learn, we never change, we keep doing this. It's been millennia. Yet we're still barbarians. Cruel and hateful. Your words are gripping and shake me.
