A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

outside educational walls

the door is locked

students mill and mumble

and scatter in shattered whisper

the teacher arrives in worn garb

with yellow notes and grizzled stubble

ready to spew his rubble

he has the key

but keeps it in his pocket

a young girl plays with her locket

watching the clock

deprived but disciplined

the class weeps in silent reverence

at the instructor's display

Whiteboard evidence

of an iota of retention

books shut fast

as the hour approaches

cell phones switch back on

feet shuffle quickly

through the passageway

from the possibilities of learning, wasted

barely tasted

a door still locked

always locked

with indifference.

Love the way you worded your thoughts in this piece. The passion for education and teaching the next generation just isn't where it should be.

Thank you for your words, Broken Soul,

Jacob,

This is a fine example of the Societally influence generation with live in, which I do term as the following: Those who believe themselves intelligent, and they are: Intelligently-Stupid: Men without a grown Man's deducive, common horse sense, mind, Women without a Woman's-Instinctive-Intuition, blindly raising children without an ounce of gumption. In order to learn, you must, first, desire to learn ...

I agree, you must first have the desire...absolutely.

Thank you for this poem, I remember Elie Wiesel said that indifference is worse than evil, lets hope that we can wake a few of these students up!

How to create interest ought to be the name instead of teaching degree.

Yes, Winston...exactly.
If this is the current state of education, I'm glad I got my schooling back in the day.

Me too, John. Me too.
Sometimes a locked door only appears to be a locked door but under closer inspection, cracks and crevices along the edges allow the knowledge to filter in, finding a home in the intelligent filing cabinet of those never really seeking the key.

But good teachers unlock those doors and I am certain you are one of them, Jacob. I believe cell phones are making the next generation stupid. I wish they would not be allowed in schools. I could picture this scene. Lydi**

An instructor once told me she wished she had a hundred students like me. I didn't get it. My grades weren't at the top of my class...more like middle. I struggled with some of the study material. But she said, you show up every day wanting to learn and I can't tell you how good that makes a teacher feel. You ask questions and you are fully engaged in the classroom. I said, thanks I guess, I just want to know everything. She laughed at that as well she should have. But I'm still a student, still learning, every day.
