What is that fragrance?

What is that fragrance?

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin
"

Can we accept within our differences we are all really the same? What do we need? What defines us?

"

What is that fragrance?

I long to Linger in the Field fragrances of crimson clover and the thrum of humming birds.

Tucked in, hunkered down against the sometimes harshness of this life.

See the world run from tenderness? A smile is still the battle line.

Must anyone be set on edge by a caring face?  Do you hear the shouts of suspicion?

It seems they are fading. Hope calls. Not a no-man’s land. Go ahead cross on in.

Wear your robe of acceptance. Open arms, the norm.

Your difference is the commonality. Mine too for none of us are identical to another.

Loneliness is the brittle place. We will slowly die and only shoot word barbs at one another leading to

our own self made prison.

The walls are critical judgment.  How about a cup of tea? Let’s laugh away our fears.

Surly we are familiar enough. For all our differences and disagreements there is also room for a new

relationship.

We all possess a heart, a soul.  What else is needed? Choice is a decision and I choose you.

I may Sometimes be silly even foolish and Harder on myself than you are.

What seems big is really small. Let us work to create an open plain where we can openly meet with one

another.

Open the door of Transparency.

Author's Note

Kathy Van Kurin
How do we view others? Are we looking for a battle line? Is there a way to disagree, to protest where peace is the focus. We must not forget that this earth is shared. Blessings
Kathy

🌿🍀 Hello, Kathy Jane 🌸🌱

Reading You is akin to a stroll through a sunlit☀️garden, filled with endless species of colorful flowers, gentle ferns of every green, bushes and plants of lilac, roses, endless varieties of azalea, and trees filled with every fruit and glorious aroma known.
And, who, but You, could have solved the mystery that we all, though different, are also the same, with frailties and strengths, dreams and desires, needs and yearnings, hate and love, hope and despair, kindness and meanness, generosity and selfishness … nearly endless traits are brought to mind by the wonderment and wisdom that flows from your heart's and mind's depthless cornucopia of insight and grasp of life around us -- human, fauna, and flora, alike.
Yes, m'dear, one could read your writings, one after another, and never fail to be amazed by the uniquely splendid being revealed that every trial and reward life has made of You, then, your many inherent qualities that allowed it to.
🌈 Ahhh, that the world were, in your soul's bright vision, as you would have it be.

It's no wonder your poetry sings so beautifully and dances so vibrantly upon the page, into our appreciatively smitten hearts, minds, and souls.
Thank you, M'Dear Poetess, with a bushel basket of happy hugs! ⁓ Richard 🍃

It was a pleasure to come back and read these lines a second time Kathy after a two year gap. Food for thought. We are even more divided now than we were then. So much work to do to appreciate the common thread that joins us rather than focusing on the divisions. Hope you are keeping well and safe.

What a wonderful thought Kathy. We focus on the negative too much and how we differ. It's more important than ever that we find a way to exist in harmony and with the earth. Every so often there are people that show us the way such as Mandela but it ordinary folk can make a difference. Well done for your inspiration.

Kathy, a brilliant and creative work that shifts the mind from seeing the battle to imagining a pleasant fragrance, together. "Your difference is the commonality" echoes long after reading this poem. We truly do have the capacity for goodness, and it lies among us as a community. You've captured that so well here.

Wonderful inspirational read. Where there is so much division around us daily., it is good to remember the common thread and what joins us rather than separates us. You have conveyed that so well here Kathy.

When I am in a mood I will crack the biggest smile and watch the passers by cringe in confusion it is fun to do that sometimes... You have a typo in the 9th line from the bottom, "surely". The content is wonderful and sweetly humanitarian. It's an honest regret that not more or all people share such a feeling of empathy, one towards the other. That said, not everyone is good or nice and there walk among us sociopaths and psychopaths. Some people would hurt us for the simple joy of watching us suffer and die. We can't give "everyone" the benefit of the doubt. Which is why we teach our children "stranger danger". My little one loves everyone and tells them so. She prays for "everyone" too. But do I trust teachers and clergy alone with my child? Absolutely not. The bad guys are out there hiding in plain sight. And one only has to watch the news to know the sad and simple truth of that.
