Chapter 6

The place were he stored food was towards the back of the cave. I was a shabby square made to keep in the cold from the ice and snow he had piled in from last winter to keep the meat fresh. It was quite a nifty structure that he took pride in creating, but throughout the last couple days, he noticed their food supply had been growing smaller and smaller with each passing day. Although she ate very little, he had two mouths to feed now. It had been three full days since her last escape attempt, and she was improving marvelously quick. He did not think that she would attempt to take her life at this point, it did not seem to him that suicide was an option to her, but rather she had just wanted to give up peacefully. He worried that if he left to hunt, she would disappear forever, but in that case, he had done his duty. He had kept her alive for this long, if it was her choice to depart from him now, that was her choice. But he had become quite attached to her, and unhealthily intrigued by her past, which she kept in the quarantine of her mind. That morning, he decided a hunt could no longer be postponed, he needed to find food. Bella was just waking up in the corner, atop the leaves she had officially claimed to be her bed when he came up to her and announced,

“Our food supply has become quite low Bella, if I don’t hunt soon, we’ll both be starved before the next full moon, and no doubt malnutrition is not something you can afford in your condition.” She looked up at him, and her face clouded over, he knew she was preparing her defenses, and she knew what was coming next.

“You know I don’t buy your story. No one comes to Earth just for a change. And you speak the Common Tongue; your planet is within the Intergalactic Alliance, there’s no way the trip was so entirely long that you nearly starved to death, nor do I believe it was the impact of your landing alone that left you in the condition I found you.”

“The ship was faulty…” she mumbled. Shadow walked towards her and sat down next to her,

“I’m not trying to be mean to you Bella, but you don’t have to lie to me. Fair is fair, you don’t have to tell me, but I don’t reveal my past until you reveal yours.” She shook her head,

“I couldn’t care less about your past.” He stared at her, and he could tell she struggled to hold his gaze. Her face began to turn red, and he looked away, smiling to himself. Several times her ears had perked up at any hint that might reveal his life story and his journey to Earth. She did a very poor job of hiding her interest.

“Right then,” he said, standing, and grabbing his bow from its place near the door, “I hope to see you when I return.” And with that, he left.

He returned late that afternoon and looked nervously inside the cave, afraid he would see nothing but empty blackness. But inside was Bella, sitting in her corner, resting against the wall taking a nap. There was really no schedule to the day here, when you were hungry you ate, and when you were tired you slept. Although most of the time Bella didn’t seem to sleep since she had recuperated, so it was a rare sight indeed to see her like this. Shadow dragged in the kill for the day on his back. It had been a fairly successful day, and he had brought down a decent number of rodents and a large buck, enough to hold them off for at least a week on its own. In a sack made of deerskin he carried in a mixture of berries and leaves, a perfect combination for a makeshift salad. He took these and a few rabbits and set them aside for dinner. The rest he shoved into the storage area, which was now full.
