What Students Think

What Students Think

A Poem by Rita L. Sev

Class, you know what time it is?

That’s right!  Another surprise quiz!

And then, you’d better write the list

Of homework sure to sprain your wrist

You’ll start with spelling words, and then

Read chapters eight and nine and ten;

Construct a 3D diorama ~

Presidents Washington to Obama;

Irregular verbs, you’ll conjugate

Research the chimpanzee heart rate

No time for friendly interactions

Mired deep in proper fractions

It makes me giddy, can’t you see,

To bask in students’ misery

Lucky for you, this load is light ~

Just wait until tomorrow night!

One way to appreciate today is to make tomorrow look worse, the management of misery. I like the way you've put it together, very well done.

This is another very funny tale! Y'know, I always rather suspected all my teachers were sadists!

School is really tough for me. I can say that but it may have been a little easier had my last name starts with M or Z but its A so I'm always on the front row seat eyeballing my professor. I could not even glance on my classmates test paper without raising a flag... I could really relate to this piece. Thanks for sharing.

entertaining, fun, and humorous.. enjoyed the playful flow and rhyme.. brings back memories.. love learning, but boy do I remember that homework... what a delightful piece! can't wait to read more:)

couldn't really find anything to critique, except maybe cut out the first "and" on the reading chapters line.. flows better in my head.. of course, just my opinion..

Thanks, April - so glad you enjoyed! I went back and forth with that "and" myself...
That spark of fun inside you must surely shine through; don't imagine for one moment your student's don't recognise it. :-)

Giggling here.....pop quizzes, homework, essay questions. Danger Will Robinson! Somehow I think your students love you, pop quizzes and all. This is delightful poetry. Lydi**

Your last line would foreshadow a propensity for doubt and fear in any student who hates school work. The workload is enough to grow a crop full of pencils for one student these days I hear. A scary but humorous poem here. Thank goodness I only read your poetry and don't participate in your curriculum. I suppose I would grade this A.
