envy is an ugly thing

wise words from my grandfather and mother

envy ...
is an
ugly
word.
it is
an
evil,
all
consuming
thing.

I try never
to be envious
although that
is a hard thing to do.

But it isn't the material
things I am jealous of.
I don't care if your kitchen's
bigger than mine,
or you have a nicer car
or a shiny hard wood floor ...

I see them, the families
in the park, riding bikes.

I see them, the couples,
holding hands, in the rain.

I see them, the blended families
cooperating, for the sake of the brood.

I see them, getting married
in the afternoon sun.

I see them,
and I try
not to be
green
with
envy.

Envy must be widespread, otherwise it would never have made it to the top seven. On the upside, a person busily engaged in envy usually evades sloth.
