Two Old Friends

Two Old Friends

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Two Old Friends

donuts and delivery trucks

as the sixteen-wheel conversations

dance under an adolescent moon

a small town sleeps

while the cigarettes act like flashlights

with midnight batteries

even the silences were golden

recognizing each other's thoughts

unsaid sounds

blend with the parking semi-

and the scent of a travelling show

of sugary delights

later we waited out the sunrise

laughing at nothing

two friends now arriving at their own sunset

years,

life has brought an interesting haul

of understanding

that little hill behind the A&P

has long been dug under

our conversations leave tire tracks

on a key board road

that has relocated us

to a screen,

words

the dance slowed

but the moon still

searches for us

yes,

even still.

Has the sound of a reunion. Not a song of passion here, but of satisfaction. The sunset does have its delights.

Appreciate your words, Dale,
j.
I feel like I'm there and can see two truck drivers eating donuts and enjoying camaraderie. Very descriptive.

I also like the part about cigarettes acting like flashlights.

Thank you Jacob
I wonder how many don't really recognize the references to pick-up the reality of having been right ...there.

Jacob, we need be care-full to not date ourselves out of an audience or student populations presence. Our relevance remains in our hands - until it doesn't anymore. Our memories remain ours but the looks of comprehension on our listeners lessen with each passing year.

You have a really good point, Chris.
I am dated, I think.
