A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto
"

for Andrew J.

"

a reading

Richard Burton voices a poem

in the dead light of a foggy evening

a sound emerges

syllable by syllable

the accent is emphasized

the stress is like an argument

positioned in sunset rhyme

a Liz Taylor's dazzling eyes

quipping onomatopoeia

snap, snap, snap

the buzz is out

they are fighting again

he reading

she wants his attention

the poem sounds so good

even with the friction

of lines that keep trying to fit together

but don't.

On paper the perfect couple ... but sometimes the verses, however beautiful, just don't fit together ... maybe don't even fit together twice. ~Jim

Wow this is beautiful, I love the tender yet loaded lines, especially "the poem sounds so good even with the frictionof lines that keep trying to fit together but don't." It speaks so well to the subject and poetry itself. Beautiful beautiful work :))

I enjoyed this poem, Jacob! I have watched some clips of Richard Burton reading poetry online and he does have a very distinctive voice well suited to reading the form; deep, calm and soothing. Contrast his voice with the high pitched and sometimes nasally voice of Liz Taylor and on voices alone, it was a wonder they ever found each others arms. Apparently they did fight like the proverbial cats and dogs in their marriage, too, so that ties in smartly with your poem. Two opposing voices that came together, seemed great together but didn’t work out. I think many can relate to that outcome in their own love lives. A highly original theme and I very much enjoyed that originality here.

Writing isn’t always a smooth go. Sometimes we want a poem to go a certain way but our inner muses have other ideas and won’t be silenced. Great write on the topic of trying to get the pieces of a poem put together
