Waiting For The Snow

Waiting For The Snow

A Poem by Kathy Van Kurin
"

Young child wonder in winter but its me doing it.

"

Waiting for the snow

Awake in the night holding out hope for its joy. It happens so seldom this silvery white rapturous treat. I am like a little child awaiting a sweet.   Three in the morning, Am I crazy? Yes, probably am. If it comes, won’t last long and be over by ten.

Around here Roads will be a crazy place. People are not use to the snow. Minutes click by and my eyelids cry out: We are so tired of your silly ways!  “Let us close!”

But I went on a walk an hour ago midst pure cold, fair.  An inner song wants to play.  I’m hoping for snowflakes; flying, drifting- silvery there.  Grown up eyes need to see snow fairies work their beauties rare.

Again to the window and turned on outside light, Oh Look! In the wee hours, flying white cuties bring a smile. Out the door to check on the weather as if it would happen any faster you see?  A good thing too, for my car window was open a slit.  Fortunately I closed it snug till morning light.

I know it’s not Christmas when the carols all say but any time in winter works fine for me. So Ring happy bells and do not forget to find happiness and dance any way that we can.

Dear chocolate brown spaniel, named Violet lies quietly throughout all of this chaos while night swaddles my house. she watches with one dozing eye, as I run about like a mouse. So what do you think? Should I turn off the light, lay me down to sleep?  Morning light will come. What will be, of course can wait. I am a adult after all and this behavior is nuts. Go to bed, go to sleep. What did my mother say when myself and four brothers and sisters were all growing up?

“You’ll know there is snow in the morning by its light.”

Our first Snow this year was in January 2022... I was Charmed at six am one morning when extraordinary larger than Life Snowflakes came floating down and in a couple of hours... there were Billows of Snowflakes as far as your Eye could See. Before Noon our Neighbor across the Road brought his Son (home from Military Academy) to Remove Snow from our Car and our Sidewalk. You could have Blown us over with a Feather. How can We thank someone who gives so much to Others. generously, Pat

I really liked the playfulness of this snd the way you used near rhyme throughout with only one spot where it seemed syntax twisted uncomfortably for the sake of the rhyme.

Thanks ,
It was written 'for the fun of it.' Not perfect but that's ok.
I like my snow only in pictures and paintings. At heart I must be a desert rat or a rat of some sort. :-)

I still love the snow. I get my camera bag, get wrapped up and go for a walk. I always get some good photos in the snow. Your enthusiasm for the snow is plain to see in this poem, Kathy!

I'm too old to blush, just "old" enough to smile. See ya Kat.
This was so nostalgic and beautiful- it had that childlike innocence around Christmas and that excitement. This poem is such a delightful piece full of childlike wonder and it sparks that warm happiness in your chest. The way the narrator is so unapologetically ecstatic for the snowfall too makes it even more real feeling. Thank you for sharing.

This was delightful. My baby girl woke up Christmas morning and the first thing she said, after a quick run and look out the window was, "Aww, I can't believe there's no snow!" Personally, I'd have liked a bit cooler holiday myself. A Christmas that feels like a balmy Spring day in the mountains is an unusual thing. I enjoyed the read.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful talents. Bless.
there is a beauty to it, the snow...and a beauty and charm to this poem as it makes me recall my youth.
I also remember Christmas in Trinidad....95 degrees and Christmas lights on the palm trees.
Oh, to be a kid again....Christmas had so much more meaning back then.
Now it is more a day to get over with. thanks for this poem, Kathy,

ahahahaha ...you are a corker aren't you, Ms. Van Kurin?! i do enjoy your child displayed tho after spending my adult years on the windy, cold, snowy prairies of SD ... it takes a poem like this one to spark any glee over snow .. but your are right .. it is a silent, beauty .. wondrous faeries floating ... here in the Ozark Mountains of AR .. it rarely snows and like in your land .. if it does .. it is soon gone... your sure right about the traffic ... the first couple weeks of a northern winter there are many many fender benders .. luv on ya! stay safe ... i hope you get your snowy wish my friend .. i see you out dancing in it ;)
