Chapter Five

Chapter Five

A Chapter by DarkLalaz

Science class came and go. We were talking about how goldfish react to their environments. They got bigger with more space and got smaller with less room. They also change their color depending on the light.

As I was heading to my usual lunch table, I saw Mako.

“Hey.” I called out to him.

             “Oh, hey Sabrina.”

“Mind if I sit next to you?”

“Okay. But I get your cookie then.” I giggled.

I was playing with my food when Mako asked,” Is this even edible?”

“I don’t even know. What is it?”

             “Beef nuggets. Mhm.”

“That looks better than what they usually serve here.”

“Haha. Really? Then you eat it first.”

             “Eew. You eat it.”

             “Why would I eat it?”

“Because you’ll do it for me?”

“Alright, fine. But I’ll only eat it if you eat it with me.”

“Okay.” I got my fork ready.

             “One.”

             “Two.”

“Three!” and we both did nothing, waiting for one another to eat it.

             We both broke out laughing.

“Well, great minds think alike.” He said.

I never noticed his smile. The way it shines in contrast to his copper skin. It makes you want to smile, too. I found myself choking for words. I wanted to ask him out to the movies.

“Mako. I want to ask you something. Will you-“

And then a group of his friends came and sat down with us.

“Hey, Mako.” A tall, lean teenager called out.

“Hey, John. Sabrina, this is my friend John.”

             “Hi.” I said timidly.

“”Helllloo, Sabrina.” A  fairskinned snowboarder said.

“Hello to you, too.” I brushed my hair back behind my ear and blushed.

“That’s Lucas. You’ll have to excuse him. He’s nervous around the ladies. Unlike me” Mako said nonchalantly as he popped his collar.

“You mean your mother?” Lucas teased.

“Boys, boys settle down. We have a guest.” John said chivalrously as he kissed my hand.

“Eh! Hands off my girl!” Lucas said.

I waited in entertainment for Mako to argue that I was with him, but he never did. I was a little hurt that he didn’t argue to win me back. After a while, they stopped fighting over me. I tried to listen to their boring conversions of football and food but couldn’t do it. Suddenly, the bell rang. Mako and his friends got up to leave. I put my hand on Mako’s shoulder to turn him around.

“Will you go out with me to the movies at 6:00?”

             “Well, I’d love to bu-“

“Great! I was worried you would reject me. Whoo, man am I relieved. I was about to-“

“Sabrina!” he interrupted me. ”I can’t go with you. I have plans tonight. I’m sorry.”

“Oh…” I said, very hurt. “Well…..that’s okay. It’s not like I’m going to go home and drown myself in Rocky Road ice cream.

             “Sabrina, wait-”

“No, no, no. That’s very okay. Well. I’ll see you around.” I turned around before I let him see me sob. I couldn’t let him see me this pathethic.
