19 Days til Christmas . . .

19 Days til Christmas . . .

A Chapter by Emily B

Dear Anna,

It’s still raining. Nothing to do but stay indoors. Mama says we mustn’t get our feet wet or we’ll catch cold. Guess what? Granny had my slightly mussed handkerchiefs for hemming just as if they had never disappeared. I wonder how she found my hiding place?

Everyone we know is speculating what buildings will be taken for hospitals. Mrs. Green says she heard the Episcopal Church. Some other ladies down the street mentioned the hotel and the Coach Maker’s establishment. Some others mentioned the Reform Church where all those secesh attend.

I wish that I help attending the sick and wounded.  I am nearly grown enough to be a nurse. I could read letters aloud and bring afternoon tea.  I could do lots of things. The next time mama goes out for one of her Ladies Aid meetings, I will present myself at the nearest hospital for service to my country.

You really capture a feeling of empathy here, Emily. So sad in regard to which buildings will be used for hospitals. I wasn't aware that only men were allowed in the hospitals during that time in history. Excellent work.
