Welfare Holiday

Welfare Holiday

A Chapter by Kenneth The Poet

Waves of customers
buy stuff the cashier cannot
afford at that time,
it's not irony mind you
but a sad state of affairs

Sad state of affairs
for many in this country
even in the white-
collar demographic of
all things, bank books in the red

Savings depleted,
constitutions defeated,
punishment meted,
what a way to be greeted,
with the balance deleted

This is the future
for so many kids today,
parents are peasants
in the land of the free and
the home of the somewhat brave

Dropping sixty bucks
on cards that gather magic
is truly a waste,
disposing of income like
water from a broken tap

No wonder those that
jockey the registers are
angry at those folks,
and behind closed doors, they cry
clown tears for themselves and all

The world is rugged
and beyond any mercy,
red all around with
green as the passcode for life,
so Merry Christmas to you

Red teeth and red claws,
green funds and green jealousy,
the gifts that keep on
giving in this violent world,
so Merry Christmas indeed

And the customers
come debit cards and work
ethics in their hands,
let the welfare holiday
commence, oh happy workers
