Chapter Nine

Chapter Nine

A Chapter by Scarlett Dale

“Melcia, will you wait here for just a second? I have to go do something and I’ll be right back.” She nodded and I left the bathroom. I raced back to my class and went up to the teacher.
“Excuse me Mr. Martin, I’m not feeling well, I’ve already called my mom but I need permission to go home.” I whispered to him.
He looked at me for a second then nodded his head, “go to the principals office.”
I left the room again then headed for the principals office. I knocked. “Come in”. Opening the door I walked into the office.
“Hello Sir, I was sent here because I need permission to go home, My friend is sick and I need to take her home.”
“Miss Lake. All right, go ahead. Who is your friend?”
I hesitated for a second. “Melcia Germane.”
Principal Collins looked thoughtful for a second, “all right you may go but only because it’s almost the end of the day.”
I left the office and hurried back to the bathroom. “Melcia?”
“Right here, where’d you go?” She asked me.
I smiled, “I went to ask if we could go home.”
Melcia looked surprised for a second but then asked. “Why are you helping me? I don’t like pity.”
I rolled my eyes, “No I’m doing it to earn my good deed badge. Come on lets go.” I took her hand and led her outside.
We reached the parking lot and I stopped, “do you have a car?” I asked Melcia.
“No, I rode with Vadia.” she said looking at me.
I stood in thought for a moment. “Well we’ll just have to walk then.” I took Melcia’s hand again and led her down the street.
After a few minutes of walking Melcia stopped, taking her hand out of mine. I stopped and turned around. “what?”
“Where are you taking me?” She asked with a little more attitude then I liked.
“Listen, I’m being nice to you, I’m helping you, and now you’re deciding to question me?” I said with more sternness then I meant. I sighed when I saw her face drop. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.” I put my arm around her shoulder. “ I was taking you to a special spot. I thought it might cheer you up.”
Melcia looked at me. “Why are you helping me? After everything that happened, why?”
“Because I like you and I have a feeling you only followed Vadia because she made you.” I said leading her down the street again. “What did you mean by ‘after everything that happened’?”
“Oh- uh. Oh I’ll just tell you!” she cried. “Vadia was the one that put the lizard in your locker. She thought maybe you’d think the boys put it there. I didn’t want her to do it, but I couldn’t stop her.”
“I see.” I said, and Melcia was quiet for the rest of the walk. We reached the spot in the park and sat down.
Melcia gasped. “It’s beautiful! Oh thank you for taking me here! I love it!” She walked over to the bench and sat down sliding her hands over it as she did. “The is so cool! It would be perfect to paint!”
I was shocked. “You paint? Really?”
Melcia smiled and looked away. “Yes.” she said quietly.
Then I realized it. “That’s what Vadia had on you isn’t it? If you didn’t do all she asked then she’d tell the whole school you painted. And I’m guessing that isn’t a very good thing to be doing if you’re popular.”
Melcia sighed she looked as if struggling with something. “Yes you’re right, that’s why I did everything Vadia said. Now I’m worried that she’ll do it anyway because of the lie.”
I was feeling really bad now. My mess was causing a bigger mess for everyone. First Biff, now Melcia. Who was next?”
“Abebi?” I turned to Melcia. “Thank you.”
I smiled and sat next to her. “You’re welcome. So if Vadia doesn’t like me so much why not just blame me for the spider and get me suspended?”
Melcia frowned. “I have an idea about that. She thinks you have potential, she thinks that if she can get to you then she can rule you and not have to worry about you and the boys.”
“She really is devious isn’t she?” I leaned back against the bench and Melcia did the same.
“Bebe? Is Kyle taken do you know?”
The question startled me, “not that I know of why?”
Melcia flushed, “well I never really could tell if he was taken or not, Vadia made sure she had tabs on all the boys but would never really share the information. I think it was so if she wanted to she could have any of them.”
“I have one question. What’s so special about these boys? She has a whole school of them that would be more then willing to serve her every whim.”
Melcia sighed, “I’m not sure but I thinks it’s because of that. They don’t fawn all over like the other boys and she finds it frustrating. Of course her eye is really on Jerry but like I said she wants all four boys to fall all over her then she choose one and toss the rest away.”
My heart beat faster, she wanted Jerry. This made everything more complicated then it already was. I was moving into dangerous grounds.

It turned out Melcia only lived a block away from me, so I walked with her to her house then went to mine.
Today didn’t turn out so bad after all.
-Sure, and you made a new friend. But what’s she going to do when she finds out that you planted the spider?-
I’m still working on that.
My mom wasn’t home so I took my favorite book and curled up on the porch swing. Halfway through it I noticed a car pull up. I closed my book.
Wonder who that is? I don’t recognize the car.
-I don’t know, go find out.-
I’m not going to just walk up to that unknown car and find out who it is.
I watched the car carefully, it was a powder blue mustang convertible. But the top was up. No one was getting out and I couldn’t see anyone through the tinted windows. Just then mom pulled up behind it. She stepped out of her car and went up to the driver’s side of the mustang. She stayed there for a few minutes then came over to the porch.
“Hi Bebe!” She said with a big smile on her face. “ I want you to see something.” She motioned for me to follow.
I stood up and walked to the mustang with her. “What’s up mom?” I asked admiring the car.
“Well sweetie, you know how dad’s job is better paying now? Well we decided that with a special savings that we’ve had plus some of his pay now, well we bought you this car!”
My jaw fell to the ground, was she serious? My own car? I screamed mentally. “Oh thank you thank you thank you!” I said and gave her a hug.
“You’re welcome, your father and I were going to wait until your graduation, but I convinced him that you needed a better way to get to school, and with Cory coming you’d need a ride since my and your father’s car would be taken.”
I was so happy. I wanted to jump in the car and take a long drive, but the person that had drove it here was still in the drivers seat. But just then a truck came by to pick him up. The driver got out of the car.
“Seth?” I almost shouted in disbelief.
Seth turned around “Bebe! Hey! I didn’t know this was your house!”
I noticed my mom giving me looks. Uh oh. “I know, I didn’t know you worked at the car dealership.”
Seth laughed “yeah, small world. I like your new ride. Drives smooth.” he glanced at the waiting truck, “anyways I got to go. I’ll see you around, bye!” He jumped in the truck and it shot off.
Not wanting to talk to my mom about Seth I slid around to the driver door as quickly as I could and started getting in. “Just a minute young lady. How did you know that boy? I thought you hadn’t made any friends.” She said crossing her arms.
My mind raced. “Oh, well I saw him around school, he’s in some of my classes. I don’t know him that well. I’m going to take a drive be back in time for dinner!” I sat down in the seat, slammed the door and started the car. I adjusted the gear and shot off. Glancing in the mirror I could see mom still standing there with her arms crossed and shaking her head.
Okay that was close.
-You’re telling me.-
I don’t want another episode like that. I’ve got to watch what I say.
-I know.-
Man! This car is awesome! I can’t wait to show Cory. Maybe I should stop by Melcia’s and show her too.
-Good idea, be friends with the girl that way you won’t need those boys as much.-
You keep bringing that up. Why must you torment me?
-Because it’s my job!-
Whatever.
I called Melcia and told her I’d meet her in front of her house in a few minutes.
