Not your hue

Not your hue

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson
"

who knows what might have been

"

This year

the winter's in a hurry

and leaves still too green

litter the snowy path.

They've no chance

to reach their true colours -

vibrant hues

of yellow, orange, and red.

I can't help

but think of you

and how you'll never reach

your autumn.

Forever young, eternally green;

who knows what colours

you could have been

now that you're dead.

I don't mind the sudden disclosure of death. There is no other way to end this poem.
But I would rework the flow of it. The poem moves the discovery of change cut short.
Maybe... (example only) ...but I can't see past your tomb....
This is a very soulful expression of grief. That far to many can relate with .

Thanks for the suggestion. I shall mull it over, as the abrupt end is very much intended

Yes and it fits the poems message.

Reviews

With the winter weather we've been having, I'm glad to see this piece. Sometimes, it's best to end where the colors are instead of being left in a season where life is gone and the color is blandness and monotony. Love the colors, love the message, love the piece.

So true. It's not the right order of things.
To me, winter always seems to be in a hurry, in as much as I want it prolonged..your last lines hit hard. Who knows what could have been, indeed...
Lovely imagery in the first stanza.

Thank you so much. Yes, the winter enters and lingers long
It is strange how we stop at this time of year and think of the dead.
Which is not a bad thing. It just seems stronger than the rest of the year.

All the sweetness and light clamouring in the dark
the short answer of course is no-one, but how we wonder and yet still hope and dream.. I have no doubt the essence of that universal law is captured here within these fine words..
