Society's Rules

Society's Rules

A Chapter by Nix is typing...
"

Some rules are meant to be broken.

"

Suck in your stomach

Push out your chest

Y'all know society's rules

Do I even have to tell you the rest?

More salads

Less meat

Y’all keep telling me

What I can and can’t eat

Driving me crazy

Borderline insane

“Think of the waist size”

MY HUNGER CANNOT BE CONTAINED

I’m STARVING

Can’t y’all see?

I just wanna be able to eat

Eat what I want

And not what society says

I’m tired of always filling up on bread

More hip-thrusts

More squats

Pump that butt

So guys can gawk

Suck your stomach back in

Oh, don’t let your belly free

You don’t want other people to see

Hidden by an oversized hoodie

Just so you can breathe

Push-up bra constricting my lungs

Let your hair down

Don’t want people to think you’re a nun

That’s what it’s like that in the girl world,

Isn’t it?

You put on makeup to hide insecurities

You put more, show less of your impurities

How did it come to you that you’re not beautiful?

Did someone tell you you’re not?

Well, don’t listen to them

Because whether I can see you or not

You’re hot

It doesn’t matter your body type

Shape

Or color of your skin

I want y’all to go out there

Face the world with a grin

It’s your mind that says you’re beautiful

It’s your thoughts that say you’re hot

Don’t listen to society’s rules

Because starving yourself is not

F**k society's rules

Be everything they won’t

You’re perfect

Whether you believe it or don’t

But remember what I said

You’re perfect the way you are

Don’t try to hide it

Let free your scars

It was bad enough when I was young, but now with social media, more and more women have hang ups about the way they look. It is all so shallow to focus on how someone looks. It's what's inside that counts. We have to keep reminding ourselves of that, over and over again. A topical write which many will relate to Nix. Learn to love your uniqueness, is what I say.

Wonderful words! There are so many rules society wants us to follow... But who cares! You are unique, that should be the norm because people's judgemental behaviour will follow whatever you do... Nice write

I loved the above lines. I believe we learn wisdom, when we like ourselves, as-is. It is important to eat right and exercise. We must keep mind and body heathy and strong. I try to eat right and I am a walker now. I was a runner when I was young. Thank you for sharing your amazing and powerful thoughts.

I loved your poetry dear poet and you are welcome.
This is just what it is like. In my late teens I had an internship at a modeling agency and the things I would hear and how the agents talked about people's bodies were insane. You could tell part of the agents were trying to be respectful, but there was no way to be respectful. I myself am not a model size, but was scouted for a plus size campaign, but the things I was told about my body and how I would have to gain more weight in various areas was disgusting. Every woman's body is policed and while there are waves in making things easier for us, we will always have to work towards respecting our bodies. Great work, obviously hit me hard haha. :)

It makes me happy that you could relate, Haley!! Thank you for your review!!
A very hot topic Nix - my daughter ( aged 40 this year ) had issues with her weight for a time - but this all changed a couple of years ago when she secured a role as a mobile carer for the elderly and infirm - after 6 months of rushing around Bristol UK doing her Care Work, she lost a couple of dress sizes and her self-esteem improved. But I agree that ridiculous pressure is brought on young women to conform to 'Model Stereotyping'.

Thank you for your review, Red!!
I'm glad you could agree with my poetry!!❤️
I think you wrote a good poem. This can also relate to guys. They too go through stringent routines to gain the interest of the opposite sex when they don't have to. It's all in the mind.

F*****g a I struggle with that myself
I love this. Beautifully expressed to really show the madness of it all. I stopped wearing makeup 4 years ago (aged50) having worn at least some makeup every day since I was 13. And I was absolutely terrified and very self conscious for a good while.

And then .. omg ... the freedom that came my way when I got used to how I really look and then the pleasure at knowing I was ok with that.

And the freedom to rub my eyes without worrying about my mascara! Now that is real joy after years of self-restraint.

All those beautiful little girls with their beautiful skin and we teach them that to be a woman, you have to cover it all up! No no no ... F**k society's rules!

Thank you very much!

This reads really well, it's clever and Poppy and carries a great message. I promise that you are more beautiful a woman than I will ever know. (Again, not intended to come on).

Gotta love yourself for what you are no matter your shape, colour, size...and that doesn't happen overnight. Age, experience, living, teach us that. As long as you are loved for what, who you are, by those that you love and care for then the thoughts of all others should matter not.
Good morning, enjoyed the read
