Shameless Chapter Twenty

Shameless Chapter Twenty

A Chapter by Emma Marie Taylor

"Jonah? Daniel?" My voice is barely a whisper, and cracked with hurt and betrayal. I don't even recognize it.
"How..."

"Clara, I can explain-" Daniel began, but Jonah put a hand to his chest. "My family was his foster family a few years ago." Jonah's eyes go dark, and he bears a look I never have seen from him.

Pure hatred.

"Let it go, Jonah. I said I was sorry!" Daniel yells. Jonah punches him across the cheek, and I stand frozen in shock. "You killed him!" He shrieks, a shriek unnatural and horrifies me.

What happened to my sweet Jonah?

                  *                      *                     *
Tears swell in his eyes as I stands in front of Daniel, crouched on his knees, back against the brick wall, blood trailing down his jaw.

"Jonah! You're hurting him!" I croak, throat closed with tears and fear. Jonah looks back at me, blue eyes swelling with remorse and slight insanity. "He was my best friend. And he killed him!"

I step towards him, confusion swirling around me in waves. "You told me he was adopted."

Jonah gives me an angry, annoyed look, "Yeah, well I lied." He looks over at Daniel and points a shaky finger at him, "That a*s ran away from my family and killed my best friend in cold blood."
Jonah kicks Daniel in the ribs, hard. "JONAH! STOP!"

Jonah picks Daniel up by the throat with unearthly strength, tears streaming down his rosy cheeks. A vein pops out of his neck, and fear comes off me in waves. "Jonah! Stop!" I crash into him, knocking Daniel out of his arms. "Daniel! RUN!" Daniel limps, looking after me, "But-"

"GO!" I scream.

Daniel takes off down the street, not looking back.

                                      *                 *                    *

I step over to Jonah and hold him in my arms, as he sobs uncontrollably in my arms, "Shhhh. Shhh. It's okay. It's okay," I whisper, stroking his hair. "Its okay."

We sit there, a bundle of comfort and tears in the cold air. After an hour, and the night sky casts over a dark blue blanket, Jonah finally whispers a broken sound in my ear, "Shouldn't you go?"

I rest his head back on  my shoulder, "I'm not going anywhere."
