Ch. 56 MomA Chapter by theladygraceling
Matt walks me to the door,
even though I protest, because he wants to make sure I'm as all right as I say. Mom opens the door before we even reach it. She has her keys and her purse like she's going out. She stops when she sees me. Her forehead creases and she clicks her tongue the way she always does when she's confused. She asks me what I'm doing home in her most accusing voice. I hesitate because I don't know what to tell her. Thankfully Matt's more prepared that I am. He gives my mom a charming smile. "The party broke up pretty early," he lies. Mom starts to ask about Johnny and Will but Matt's ready for that too. "Johnny stayed to help clean up. Will had to run some errands for his mom. So I offered to drive Riley home. If I were the one to say it, Mom never would have believed me. But Matt sounds so nice, and charming, and helpful, and honest, that even I almost believe him. "Who are you?" Mom snaps. She's trying to sound mom-like and suspicious, but I can tell that she already believes him. Matt holds his hand out and smiles politely. "Matt Norther," he says. Mom lets him go without a hint of doubt. He walks back to his car and says goodbye. I wave and say thanks. I know what Mom hears. She hears thanks for the ride. But I know Matt hears something else.
