Two Left Shoes and Losing You

Two Left Shoes and Losing You

A Chapter by DavidRyanM

Barry had a slight mental problem that they were never able to diagnose.

He would always try to put on two left shoes, never the same style, yet he thought

he was doing it right. His girlfriend would help him in the morning to pick out the right

ones, delicately slipping them onto his feet, hoping he would finally remember the next time. One morning, after getting ready for her brother's wedding, she walked into

the living room and saw that he had done it again, and he had trapped himself in the left

corner of the room. She grabbed him by the hand and walked him to the car, drove him to

the park, opened his door and helped him out. He asked what they were doing there. She

said they should go on a walk. She helped him stay straight until they got into the open field and then she let go of his hand and continued on her own. Barry tried to walk with her, but veered drastically to the left while she kept walking straight. He yelled for help, but she ignored him and smelled the air; enjoying her new freedom.

I really like this one. Like, Barry's "slight mental problem" was a metaphorical way of approaching the choices people make, and how some of us are extremely off base, whe the ret stay on the "straight and narrow". It could be said that the girl character tried to veer off course, but in the end decided to gain her "freedom" by direction- choosing the straight path, or normalcy. Barry's one of those poor suckers that doesn't know any better, and wants to go forward, but is constantly sabotaging himself. I might be completely wrong, but that's what I got out of this. Well done. I love your short pieces because I immediately speculate, and come up with some random interpretation. I do have to say though, did you mean to have the detail about her brother's wedding in there? Because if so, then I could say the exact same thing about this, only with the context of "commitment". :)
