The superintendent knocked on the door, “Lexi, its Charlie, are you in there?” There was no answer, “I saw her come in, she’s probably sleeping.” he said to the officers.

“Would you unlock the door please?” one of the officers asked. Charlie sighed, pulled her key out of his pocket and inserted it into the door.

Jacob got to the door just as Charlie was unlocking the door, “Charlie, is Alex okay?” he asked

The officers looked at Jacob, “You are?” one asked

“Jacob Cartwright.” he said, “Is Alex okay?”

“I don’t know sir.” the other officer said, “She was on the phone with a friend when the friend said the line went dead.” Jacob’s heart began to pound in his chest. The officers looked Jacob over, “Were you meeting Ms. Bradshaw?”

“I was to meet her at a coffee house at three forty-five.” Jacob said

One of the officers looked at his watch, “It’s only two thirty.”

“I wanted to surprise her.” Jacob said.

The officer gave a nod and motioned for Charlie to unlock the door. Charlie unlocked the door and opened. The officers walked into the apartment and looked around. Jacob walked past the officers to the back where the rooms where and saw Alexandria lying on the bed.

“Alex.” he called out as he rushed over to her.

He sat on the other side of the bed as the officers came into the room. Once other officers picked up the phone and spoke into it, “Ma’am the police are here. You’re friend is passed out on the bed.”

Theca sighed, “Who was the man who was just speaking?”

“He says he’s her date.”

“I am her date!” Jacob exclaimed.

“Did you know if she had a date?” the officer asked Theca.

“I wouldn’t know. The last time I spoke with her was two weeks ago when she was in my office. I’m her therapist.”

“Okay, ma’am. It looks like your friend is waking up and she should be okay.”

“Thank you. Have her to call me later, please.”

“Yes, ma’am.” the officer hung up the phone and turned to face Jacob as Alexandria was waking up.

“Ugh.” Alexandria said as she moved to sit up.

“Easy Alex…” Jacob said

Alexandria’s eyes flew open and she sat up, “How did you get in here Jake?”

“So you do know him ma’am?” the officer asked

Alexandria turned her head and saw two officers standing to the side, “How did all of you get in here?”

“Sorry, Lexi, I let them in.” Charlie said

“Why?” she asked

“Your therapist called us when you passed out.” the officer said

“I was coming to surprise you when I saw them at your door.” Jacob said, “What happened?”

“I had an episode...” she said shaking her head, “I called Theca and then passed out.”

“So are you okay, ma’am? Do you need to see a doctor or anything?”

Alexandria shook her head, “No, I’m fine, thank you.”

The officers nodded their heads and turned to walk out of the room, “Your friend would like you to call her back when you feel up to it.”

Alexandria nodded her head and the officers walked out of the room, “Thank you again.” she said, “You too Charlie.” Charlie nodded his head and followed the officers out of the room and then the apartment, closing and locking the door when they walked out.

Once they were out of the room, Alexandria sighed and stood up. “Are you sure you’re okay?” Jacob asked

Alexandria turned and smiled at him, “I’m fine now. Thank you.”

Jacob stood up and walked to her, “What happened?”

“About forty-five minutes after you left me at the Studio, I saw my ex. Then  when I got home there was a message from him.” she said taking some deep breaths, “It just freaked me out.”

“We don’t have to go out tonight, if you don’t want.” Jacob said wrapping his arms around her, “In fact, I insist we stay in.”

Alexandria laughed, “We really don’t have to.”

“No really, I want to.” he said, “It looks like you could use the help packing.”

Alexandria gave Jacob a look, “How did you know?”

“The movers told me that Catty called them.”

Alexandria laughed, “Ahh yes, they would have more than likely have been moving my stuff from storage.”

“Well, my offer still stands to help you pack.”

“Why don’t we save that for later on this week?” she said with a laugh, “I’d really like to get out and take my mind off things.”

“Okay, fine with me.” Jacob said, “Where to?”

“Umm…how ‘bout where we were going to meet at?”

“Books and coffee it is.” Jacob said, “I hear there’s supposed to be some poetry reading.”

Alexandria nodded her head, grabbed her jacket, “I know. I go every Monday.”

Jacob laughed, “Sounds like you’re set in your ways.”

“You have no idea.” she said with a laugh. She picked up her keys off the bed and turned to look at Jacob. She gave him a soft smile, “Thank you.”

Jacob tilted his head and looked at her, “For what?”

“Coming like you did.”

Jacob walked to her and gave her a hug, “I was trying to surprise you.”

Alexandria hugged him back, “It worked.”

“Glad to hear.” he pulled away from the hug, took her hand and led her out the room, “Now let’s go before I change my mind.”
