Chapter 4

A Chapter by Jemma Packman

Indigo at a small diner. She is sat by the window. Priscilla is sat a table not far away. Indigo checks her phone. Priscilla comes and sits down with her. Priscilla says "I've been thinking."
"What are you doing?"
"I should be here. A mediator, if you will."
"You agreed to stay back."
"We've been her for half an hour."
Indigo checks her phone again. "And she's got seven more minutes to show. Please, go back over there."
"If she gets here, I will. Why seven minutes? That's exact."
"We had a time to meet with a window of acceptable lateness. She's got seven minutes left."
The diner door opens and a small bell rings. Indigo and Priscilla look at the door. A middle-aged man is entering. "I hope that's not her."
"Shut up."
A waitress comes over with a small selection of breakfast items, places them on the table and says "There you are. Would you like a refill on your drinks?"
"We didn't order this."
"No, Summer did. She said you looked like you could use it."
"Where is she?"
"Sat right there at the counter."
Priscilla says "Where?"
The waitress looks over her shoulder. "She must've left. She's been sat there for nearly an hour."
Indigo stands up and starts walking around the diner. Her phone starts to ring. Priscilla passes her the phone and says "It's her."
Indigo takes the phone and answers it. "Where are you?"
The same female voice came through the phone. "I had to go. Please accept the hangover food as an apology."
"We were both here, why didn't you come over?"
"I bottled it. You didn't notice I was there."
"I don't know who I'm looking for."
"Yes you do."
"You were supposed to meet me to prove it."
"I got scared. Check the pancakes. That should help."
Indigo picks up the top two pancakes and sees slices of strawberries. "So, you hide fruit in pancakes? I'm still not convinced."
"Then, please, meet me Friday like I said?"
"So you can stand me up again?"
"I'll be there. Bring your friend if you're worried. And tell her to stop prodding the eggs." Indigo looks at Priscilla who is poking the yolk of the egg making it wobble. "Food's paid for, enjoy it."
"Where are you?"
"I'm as close as I'm going to get for now. Friday? Please?"
"Fine. Friday. You better be there."
"I will be. I'll text you when I'm there."
"I'll find you."
"Oh, Indi? Even with a hangover, you look beautiful."
The phone goes dead. Indigosits down next to Priscilla. Priscilla says "Can we eat this?" Indigo nods. Priscilla starts picking at the food. "You not having any?"
"It was her, Cilla. It's her. She was here and I didn't notice."
"Don't beat yourself up. It's been seven years."
"She recognised me."
"You're pretty hard to forget."
"So was she."
